১৯৬৩ সালের ডিসেম্বরের শেষ সপ্তাহে ভারতের কাশ্মীরের হযরতবাল দরগা থেকে মহানবী মুহাম্মদের দাড়ির চুল চুরি যাওয়ার জন্য ১৯৬৪ সালের ২রা জানুয়ারি থেকে পূর্ব পাকিস্তানের (বর্তমান বাংলাদেশ) খুলনাসহ বিভিন্ন শহরে সপ্তাহব্যাপী দাঙ্গায় হাজারখানেক হিন্দুর মৃত্যু হয়। মূল কাহিনি খুলনার দুটি হিন্দু পরিবার নিয়ে। স্বর্ণকার চিন্তাহরণ আঢ্য এবং দর্জি শশধর মন্ডলের পরিবার। এই কাহিনির মূল সময়কাল ১৯৬৩ থেকে ১৯৮০। সেই অস্থির সময়, সতেরো বছরের কালখণ্ডের ঘটনাবলীর, এক দ্রোহকালের খণ্ড-খণ্ড ছবি আঁকার চেষ্টা হয়েছে এই উপন্যাসে।
