‘সতী ও স্বতন্তরা’-র প্রথম দুটি খণ্ডের উপ-শিরোনাম ছিল ‘বাংলা সাহিত্যে নারী’, কিন্তু বর্তমান খণ্ডটির উপ-শিরোনাম ‘বাংলা লোকসাহিত্যে নারী’। লোকনাট্য, লোকপুরাণ, ছড়া, রূপকথা, কিস্সা, কিংবদন্তি নারীসম্পর্কিত গান, নারীদের গান-এই সবকিছুর সুনির্বাচিত একটি সংকলন এই গ্রন্থ। সম্পাদিকা শাহীন আখতারের এই সংকলন যদি শুধুই লিখিত সাহিত্য নির্ভর হ’ত, তাহলে বঙ্গনারীর যে নানাচিত্র আগের খণ্ড দুটি থেকে পাওয়া গেছে তা নিশ্চিতভাবেই আংশিক হিসেবে গণ্য হত। ফলত, এই খণ্ডের মাধ্যমে সংকলন গ্রন্থটি সম্পূর্ণতা পেল। ব্রতকথায়, প্রবাদে, মুখে-মুখে ছড়া রচনায় যে নারীরা দীর্ঘকাল তাদের দক্ষতার নিঃসংশয় প্রমাণ রেখেছে তেমনই শুধুমাত্র স্কুল-কলেজের শিক্ষা না থাকায় লিখিত সাহিত্য রচনায় তাদের দীর্ঘকালের অনুপস্থিতি সত্যিই বিস্ময়কর। পর্ব-বিভাজনে সম্পাদিকা প্রকৃতই তাঁর সৃষ্টিশীল মনের পরিচয় দিয়েছেন, আশা করা যায়, ভবিষ্যতে পুরুষ ও নারীর একে অপরের প্রতি মুক্ত স্বচ্ছ, স্বাভাবিক দৃষ্টিভঙ্গি গড়ে তোলার ব্যাপারে তিন খণ্ডে বিভক্ত এই সংকলন গ্রন্থটির বিশেষ একটি ভূমিকা থেকে যাবে।
