পুঁথিপার্বণে গোলা ভরেছিল বাংলা। ‘পশ্চিম আজি খুলিয়াছে দ্বার’_ধনীর দয়ার দানে কেনা ছাপাখানায় ব্রাহ্মণ কম্পোজিটর গঙ্গার জলে ছাপার কালি গুলে পবিত্র ধর্মশাস্ত্র ছাপিয়ে_বিনামূল্যে বাইবেল বিলি করা পাদরিদের ঢঙে_বিলিয়েছেন। কিন্তু কম্পোজিটরের মাসমাইনে জোটাতে বিলেতেরই গ্রাব স্ট্রিটের পর্নোও এল বটতলার পথে পথে। ওঁচা কাগজে, ভাঙা টাইপে, ভুলে-ভরা বটতলার বই সস্তায় ছাপা শুরু হল। অন্ধভক্তির ধর্মশাস্ত্র এড়িয়ে দিনক্ষণলগ্ন খোঁজার পাঁজি, পুরোহিত দর্পণ, নিত্যকর্ম পদ্ধতি-র ভিড় হল। সময়টা উনিশ শতকের দ্বিতীয় দশক। বটতলার স্বর্ণযুগের সেটাই আরম্ভ। বাঙালির বটতলার কোনো নথিবদ্ধ, প্রামাণ্য ইতিহাস নেই, তবু কিছু তথ্য আছে, আছে কিংবদন্তীসদৃশ চালু গপ্পো, আর ছেঁড়া ছেঁড়া স্মৃতি অথবা বিস্মৃতিকথা, যা অতীতের অজানা কোনো বিন্দু থেকে শুরু হয়ে বর্তমান ছুঁয়ে প্রবহমান আগামী-র দিকে। স্মৃতি-সত্তা ভবিষ্যৎ_এসব কিছু নিয়েই বটতলার ভোরবেলা ।
